please review the second revision of the gotVirtual Community standards.
there are items that require further context, such as trolling and harassment.
if there is something in the cs you dont like or causes concern, please let it be known.

this is not chiselled into stone. this is a solicitation for honest feedback.
the cs is of little value if it does not reflect the wishes of the community.

    =========================================================================

the gotVirtual community is a moderated discussion board, and topics are monitored frequently. all inhabitants are expected to abide by the gV Community Standards as a condition of participation.

these community standards are meant to serve as a guideline, not as an all-inclusive list of rules. they may not address all circumstances which may trigger a gV antiVirus module or interface module to take action. these Community Standards do not limit the algorithms a module utilises, although they do define them well enough for all practical intents and purposes.

inhabitants are expressly forbidden from engaging in or contributing to the following:

    inappropriate content
    • child porn - child pornography or the sexualisation of a child, real or not, is explicitly forbidden.
if you are in doubt it is advised to err on the side of caution.
    • shock gore - media celebrating genuine human suffering, misery, or misfortune will be closely scrutinised. gotVirtual is not the place to post pictures or videos relating to actual suicide, road trauma, autopsies, or crime scenes/morgues and the like.
    • pornography - legal xxx imagery may only be posted in an appropriate thread in the node designated as 'mature'. this is not, however, an invitation to spam hardcore porn into all available threads. you will be expected to be respectful of the threads intent and subject matter, no matter what the case.
note: nudity of grid avatars is permitted in node 'theGrid', provided the thread is clearly designated ::nsfw::
    unwanted behaviour
    • spamming
    • trolling (please define) mere disagreement is not trolling.
    • harassment to be defined.
    avatars and signatures
    • avatars and signatures may not contain any inappropriate content, encourage, or promote any unwanted behaviour or real life disclosure.
    • avatars or signatures engineered specifically to annoy or to impede others use of gV are not permitted, such as strobing gifs or using an unnecessarily high number of graphics (a la big sig).
    • avatars may not be used to 'imposter' another user.
    • avatars and signatures may not be used to denigrate an inhabitant, or 'call out' a nemesis.
    real-life disclosure
    • any disclosure of another inhabitants personal real-life identity or personal information is not welcome.
    • that being said, please dont share your personal information with others.

    =========================================================================
vigorous debate of this policy is encouraged, but under no circumstances should this thread be derailed or used as a venue to deride one another.
let us make this more clear: the MCP will not, under any possible circumstances, tolerate off-topic commentary or ad hominem exchanges within the threads it initiates.

So is adult nudity considered, " legal xxx imagery"? Sounds like it is. No proviso for a NSFW subject exception if posted elsewhere? I think at this stage it's pretty clear that the community in general views sexual imagery differently than sexualized child images or gore images.

I would love some clarification on "avatars and signatures may not be used to denigrate an inhabitant, or 'call out' a nemesis." Have we already seen example(s) of this behaviour?

Would quotes be considered calling someone out?

To what extent? Obviously, some personal information sharing is encouraged.

None of the fields shown seem to be mandatory for what I am seeing. You can perfectly choose "unspecified" for your gender and not check or complete any of the other fields and still be a forum member.

I am not sure what are you trying to convey here.

In my opinion, what Mars expressed with
    is simple common sense.
    Hope this helps.

If disagreement isn't trolling, then what is?

    And what's harassment?

Who are we allowed to 'call out' in our sigs?

Snapper O'Callaghan It's not a hug. I'm not finished strangling you.

I'm working for clarification of the new policy, which states "please dont share your personal information with others."

That statement, taken in a vacuum, would indicate that I am actually required to choose "unspecified" and not check or complete any fields in a profile.

I then found myself wondering if I should consider a Google Voice number to be personal information and so posting my own such number would get me forum demerits and public flogging.

Perhaps I'm being picky or assholish, but I found the phrase interesting in conjunction with what I posted above and I felt like some clarification on the reasoning and/or specific issues might be warranted.

Obviously, nobody wants to see any unwanted doors. I'm sure of that.

Snapper O'Callaghan It's not a hug. I'm not finished strangling you.

It does not. I am never sure why I shouldn't do with my own information as I please.

I would guess this is a safety valve behavior for people that have post-post regret after giving up information online and which will be archived forever by someone and potentially reposted with the caveat that the PPRer already put it out there.

Either way, I was not asking for an opinion on what MARS meant, I was asking for admin clarification/specification.

Please excuse me for stepping on toes.

The admin doesn't appear to respond directly to such requests, but rather wants us to fight it out amongst ourselves. Hence the responses you've received.

I thought we already did that in CS - part I.

Additionally, Tarzan is correct in that the segment quoted was clear.

Therefor, my concern was how that segment (and the specific part I quoted) meshed with the examples I added to my first post in this thread.

Well, good questions. And, we must answer them now among ourselves. So, what are your thoughts on trolling and harassment? Can you think of some examples? Some would get this thread going in the right direction.

Spamming is advertising and links to websites, locations and products. Until we have a Virtual Advertising area - this is not a good thing here.

Trolling, in my opinion, is concentrating on specific posters rather than the subject being discussed. Such as responding to a poster by calling them crazy, clueless or other personal attacks.

Harassment is posting to tell other posters to treat a poster badly because of one or more poster's personal feelings and agendas.

Maybe its me but I have no trouble understanding any of these..... basicly I guess we need to try to behave like grown up stars in the planets orbit/path. Not really rocket science.

I'm guessing that trolling has nothing to do with the lil ugly guy under the bridge or fishing. Harassment is tough I think, like if someone gets pissed off over a post or poster and voices that is that harassment?

I'm not sure just getting pissed off ad arguing is harassment. I think when the same poster keeps following the same person from thread to thread insisting they 'prove' what ever they post or calling them a liar for their posts (and then supporting their claims by quoting older posts).

Actually trolling is, posting "inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." says Wikipedia.

While someone may do what you have said as an attempt to troll, it's not necessarily a troll.

Certainly a case can be made that there could exist someone who posts such constant utter bullshit that they may feel the natural reaction of some to be what you describe.

You call that help? What value is this repost of what was already stated by Mars other than to deride a request for clarification? If not here, than where? I'm so glad you are all clued in and all but why do you need to intervene when a request for clarification is requested? Why do you have a problem with such a request and need to snuff out any discussion about the implications?

You understand, good for you. Good for you! It must be so hard to suffer through us slow ones who aren't completely sure of the possible implications.

*sigh* If only I could be so wise and in the know as you. *cries*

I'll post my opinion when I've finished listening to others discuss it, if it's allowed. Go hold tarzan's hand and soothe his anxiety in the meantime.
