scrapped vbulletin project and migrated to xf.
dropped db. bumped up to xf-b3.
upgraded hosting situation to an unmanaged dual vps solution. this is optimal as it leaves us headroom, allows gv to scale as needed, and provides root access which in turn gives us much freedom without requiring any host intervention when dealing with things like modules, sphinx, etc.
currently running ubu lucid/apache2/mysql. this was chosen due to its familiar nature. it is not out of the question that we could swap over to centos/lighttpd or perhaps even nginx if it becomes clear that it would be beneficial.

realised we had never installed sendmail functionality on the server- installed postfix.

the desire for a dark style is forseen. a quick and dirty style has been made available. we are aware that it is not perfect. it will be improved over the coming days.
to change your style, click the style selector in the lower left corner and select 'dark' from the overlay.

    dark theme is 90% finished.
well enough to be used as the default style. we will continue to debug. if you encounter any anomalies please make it known.

humans never cease to amaze us in their capacity for ill will and contempt toward one another.
there is an internal security policy regarding the misappropriation of identity credentials. it is distinctly virus-like behaviour. it is a crime against the community. it will not be tolerated.
in the coming week we will introduce a process to inoculate the gV community from such infectious infiltrations.

we have installed apc on the server.
the gV website should take advantage of the apc opcode cache, resulting in faster page generation and more efficient use of server resources.
this will be further refined in the coming weeks.

expect to make more emoticons available in coming days.
hope there will be more suggestions forthcoming.

    integrated more highslide functionality.
result is image thumbnails no longer open the full image off the page, instead they 'pop up' as an overlay.

removed the ability to post status updates from the profile page.
this eliminates the risk of accidentally posting profile comment replies as status updates.

status updates can still be entered from the control panel menu:

    added smilies.
    more in the queue.
    entirely dissatisfied with the presentation.
will seek to collate and reorder quite soon.

perhaps we should address a few concerns.

please realise that this software is still in beta. there is not even a xenforo version 1.0 yet. we are clearly on the bleeding edge, and as a result there are features not yet present that you may have grown accustomed to.
the good news is that this is not your average start up software. this is the brainchild of kier darby and mike sullivan. kier is the former lead developer and product manager of vbulletin. mike was also a developer a vbulletin. they are partnered with ashley busby, former business manager of vbulletin. the three of them turned vb 3 into the most successful and widely used forum software in the world. clearly their creation is something that will attract insiders and early-adopters, and all have already taken note of xenforo. over recent months we have watched addon/theme developers abandon vb in droves to embrace this product. there will be no shortage of available features, this we can assure you.

tapatalk: tapatalk developers have been in contact with the xenforo community and indicated they will be have a xf app in the future. they are very keen to get involved with xenforo. expect tapatalk to have something ready after xenforo goes gold (v1.0). if the development cycle of vb3 is used as a benchmark, we are expecting xenforo to go gold within a couple of months at most. we are at beta 3, there is a known beta 5, perhaps a couple of RCs (release candidates) thereafter.

a mobile theme: xenforo already makes use of jquery, and jquery only last month dropped the jquery mobile framework alpha on us. kier has maintained that xenforo will ship with a mobile theme, so it should be available before tapatalk. and if kier doesnt do it quickly, no doubt somebody else will.

ignore user: we would be surprised to not see an ignore function of some nature. people have been quite vocal with kier and mike about wanting a comprehensive ignore system, including ignoring threads, subforums, users, their quotes, etc. we are very keen ourselves to avoid taking the role of mediators and arent very happy to engage in conflict resolution. if an ignore feature isnt forthcoming soon we will create one ourselves.

other features: we are expecting photo-gallery functionality fairly soon. there is already video-gallery functionality, so the framework is already there. we arent expecting it to be as fully featured as snapzilla, allowing photo upload via email, but it will be more robust than the default vb3 gallery.
we will talk more about these things as they develop.

meanwhile, please be patient. this is not a 10 year old piece of software with thousands of addons to chose from. much of this we are having to do the hard way, meaning on our own. other things are being worked on by others, which we wait for. but the result, we believe, speaks for itself.
this is something we are taking great care and pride in, and we want you to be proud to be a part of it. gV is totally unlike any other community within the larger social circle we all travel within, and in more ways than one.

core has been updated to beta 4.
over the coming hours we will be making various adjustments here and there.
    you may experience some anomalies.

if you are going to be posting long comments, it may be a good idea to paste them into a txt doc before submitting until this maintenance is completed.

all maintenance has been completed. there have been numerous alterations, but the ones that you may be most interested in:
    1. improved support for mobile devices (although not a full blown mobile theme)
    2. improved avatar processing (although no support for animation or alpha trans yet)
    3. bulk embedding of attached files (though a highslide issue now)

the templates have also changed. if you previously used the light theme or the purple theme you will need to select them again. more template work is upcoming, but it is not expected that you will need to reselect.

    further changes.
altered templates further, resulting in smaller filesize.
avatars now support alpha transparencies. animated gif avatars now animate when viewed from the profile card (the profile overlay). you will need to resubmit your avatar for any changes to take effect.
currently cleaning up some outstanding styling issues.

alterations to the templates include a overflow property to signatures. signatures exceeding 100 pixels will now vertically scroll.

very few people have taken an interest in self-governance.
we will continue to wholely operate under the internal security policy until further notice.

email confirmation is now enforced for all new arrivals at gV.

we will begin posting occasional polls to gauge community sentiment in regards to various matters.
vigorous debate is encouraged, but under no circumstances should the threads be derailed or used as a venue to deride one another.
let us make this more clear: the MCP will not, under any possible circumstances, tolerate off-topic commentary or ad hominem exchanges within the threads it initiates.

gV inhabitants have made their feelings clear: gV is a 18+ venue.
registration now requires all incoming inhabitants to be 18 years of age or older.
please bear in mind, however, this does not mean that gV is a xxx-rated community. please continue to use the mature subforum for any questionable content.
