The new Second Life Forums are at
Roles and Ranks
What roles, or ranks, are available on the Community website??
Like most online communities, we have a series of ranks/roles to recognize users who contribute content valued by the community. When a person first logs into the community website, they receive the New Resident rank. As they spend time as active participants, their rank will change. The higher the rank, the more exacting the requirements.
Higher ranks in a community mean additional permissions or features may become available to you. The current rank groups and corresponding roles are listed below. Some roles have multiple different rank divisions within them. The main associated permission additions are listed after each rank/role.
New Resident can:
Create a profile
Use private messages
Adjust preferences and settings
Use a signature
Use simple HTML in posts and signatures
Use uploaded images as their avatars
Insert images they have uploaded in posts
Share uploaded images
Add a Youtube video to posts
Add a tag

Start new knowledge base articles and edit draft (unpublished) articles (cannot publish articles)
Nominate topics for knowledge base articles
Allow user to edit published knowledge base articles (cannot publish changes)
How do I change in rank and permissions?
It will be a natural progression based on community participation. Here are some of the general criteria used in the formula that automatically determines ranks/roles.
Active participation in various areas including but not limited to: kudos, contributions that include appropriate posting, and accepted solutions
You may notice that your rank has changed on your profile or on your messages. When that happens, look for additional permissions under the My Settings and under the options menu on your posts.
Can I elect to not show my rank?
No, you cannot. But you do have other privacy options available to you. In your settings, under Social Connect in the Badgeoption, you can choose what information shows with your name on your posts. The options are Kudos, Accepted Solutions, and Topics. Rank and posts are always displayed.
What icons are used for roles and ranks?
The main icons used for roles and ranks are as follows: (VIP is not currently available)
Can't log on yet though, it seems, even if they are the real thing, rather than a test database set.
Pep (No General Discussion subforum though, for the time being at least; nowhere at all to ask the really important questions like "Is it cheating?" or even "Does my bum look big in this?")
If they are anything like old ones no thanks. I like talking like a sailor and don't care much for forum authority. I'll stay here.
I forgot to ad "looking at boobies". I never get to see that on any official forums.
It looks somewhat reasonable. I like the tabs at the top. But I would like to see a tab with MY post history. I could never find what I was commenting on in the last forum unless I revived one of their e-mail alerts - but that was sending e-mails for hundreds of posts in the thread and it was a disaster.
Sorry Sarah but you will have company I think....these are just too restrictive for my freewheeling style.
Vulgarity, Profanity, and Sexually Explicit Content: No name calling, expletives, or any language that is offensive, pornographic, or sexually explicit. Profanity, hate speech, or threats of violence are not permissible.
Harassment: Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. Harassment can include text or images that contain racist, threatening, abusive or hateful material.
Personal Information: Sharing someone else’s personal information—of any kind—is not allowed. Disclosing another Resident’s real-world identity, contact information, or the text of interpersonal communications (chat, email, IM) is not allowed.
Nudity or Mature Content: Keep the content of your postings “General” as provided in our Maturity Guidelines. Postings that do not comply with the “General” rating may be removed.
Spamming, Solicitation and Advertising: Spamming is not allowed. This includes aggressive self-promotion. No advertising or promotion of specific Second Life merchants, Marketplace listings, products, or services, unless the forum area is specifically for the buying or selling of Second Life products or services, for example, a “for sale” or “wanted” forum. Do not reference other websites offering any product or service.
Note: It is OK to have a signature line with a link to your Second Life profile or Marketplace merchant profile as long as it is not for advertising or commercial promotion.
Interpersonal Disputes or Personal Negative Commentary: If you have a personal disagreement, do not post about it on the Second Life community pages. Residents who have personal differences have other channels of communication available to them — private messaging in the forums, IM within Second Life, or chatting within Second Life.
No Flaming: "Flames" are hostile or disruptive posts, or messages intended to incite an angry response. Spirited discussion and constructive disagreement are welcome, but name-calling and airing of grievances are not appropriate in our discussion areas. We will also not tolerate any post that encourages others to violate any policy of Linden Lab
Off Topic Content: Please keep your commentary relevant to the discussion and within the format that the forum, board or question and answer area require. (For example, in the Answers section, please follow the Q&A format of the discussion.) Content that is blatantly off topic is not permitted. You may also not post regarding subjects that do not relate to Second Life.
Abuse of Moderation or Moderators: Please honor our moderation process and the decisions that come out of it; they are being made in order to provide you with a productive environment for conversations about Second Life. We prohibit abuse of our moderation process, including the following:
posts that discuss or re-post material that has been removed or locked by a moderator
posts questioning a moderator’s decision
posts that discuss the status of any Resident account (e.g., on hold, suspended, etc.)
frivolous or malicious use of the abuse report feature
All I can say is...
*shrug* Sounds like the same recipe for drahma and chaos with a shiny new interface.
If all I wanted was a shiny new interface, I'd post on gotVirtual. Oh, wait.... :Oo:
Fuck that noise!
One way to find your post history is to click on your name under 'User Online' on the right side of the page. However, it does not appear that the site is live yet. The 'recent' posts all have February post dates.
look at all those rules and restrictions
Is that endorsing free-for-all personal attacks? Because I think what the new official forum rules are trying to convey is that that sort of forum behavior pretty much disrupts any real discussion that is taking place. Time to go back to what forums were developed for in the first place: an exchange of information and ideas.
With all of these new forum software packages emerging it is obvious that hope is not lost for reasonable open internet social discourse.
Thanks. Yeah, it does seem as if they have forgotten to add tools for the user to control their account easier (again) Maybe some bitching & moaning will get something set up
Lias, are your retarded? It's a joke.
Right. Changing the forum format will alter human behavior. Got it.
At least on the official forum this would no stand. Just because you claim to be making a joke and a person questions it - that does not make them retarded.
It is the rules coupled with the format.
Usually known as conditioning.
Evident in the fact that cavemen did not live in split level ranches in the suburbs.
i think there are so many rules that pretty much any discussion will inevitably run in violation at some point, which opens the door for arbitrary moderation.
