At least your wooden stick doesn't have fleas... (._.)
I see no evidence of that.
Right. If you purchase a broken toaster you can still purse shop.
The whole 'little to no rules' thing works great for small groups when forums are brand new. It's entirely possible for such group to reach consensus on what little is needed; and other rules simply don't have to be made or even considered because nobody in the group is prone to post anything questionable in those directions and everyone is knows and is confident of that. It's unnecessary because nobody will be 'going there'.
But all such experiments wind up the same way when the forums are open enrollment, in my experience. Eventually someone joins who is not only willing to 'go there', but plans on doing so as much as possible. Suddenly, and sadly, rules start having to be made because the forum owners want to save their grand experiment from becoming just another cat-hole of the Internet.
IIRC, this place came about last year because of concerns about other places punishing users for things like annoying the forum owners on a bad day and so forth. That was my impression at least.
Pretty much, yeah. That's the ticket. =^-^=
And just to further clarify some very valid points ^^^...
"Going there" is as nebulous as "Inappropriate" and "unwanted behavior". As we've seen through the many discussions here, one (wo)man's "unwanted behavior" is another's grist for the mill. Small groups tend to form around a common cause, and/or a common weltanschauung, so, almost by default, they can agree on what is (or is not) "inappropriate", or, regarding "going there", can agree on exactly where "there" is. Once a given group exceeds a certain size, that homogeneity, if it's a healthy growth, becomes diluted and diverse. Trying to retain a 'consensus' that was developed and worked for a group of 40, will likely cause chaffing, chapping, and gnashing of teeth in a group of 200, as well it should.
At that point, there are only two courses of action from which to pick: Clamp down, reinforce both the rules and their enforcement, to maintain the homogeneity at all costs, even if it curtails (or radically retards) growth, OR expand the options, bifurcate the growth path, and try to accomodate as many factions as possible, much as virtual worlds such as Second Life do as a matter-of-course. Not necessarily "room for everyone at the inn" so much as, "if you build another inn, they'll fill that one too!" If given both the opportunity and the option, people will naturally gravitate to whatever level of Forum Decorum feels most comfortable for them. Blessed be the forum admins who figure that out, and set things up accordingly, as mars has done, thus far.
While walking by a window full of purses, I enter and then **BAM** Adolph Hitler HIMSELF hits me square in the face. And gives me fleas.
It's kinda like that.
I don't believe my intro e-mail about gV made the promises your made. I recall it mentioning fair moderation.
"this will be quite unlike sc or slu, both in terms of software and admin style. im really keen to let a community take the lead and exercise a bit of self-determination!"
From the invitation email.
Thanks Lain. No mention of no admin. Just better admin.
self-determination, or as we call it in the states: MODERATION FROM ABOVE!!!
No, there was no mention of 'better admin' either. Only that it would be "quite unlike"....in terms of "style". You inferred the rest. But that second part, about the community 'taking the lead'...that seems to have gotten lost in translation.
I guess I'm lost in the confusion of so many threads/posts about the same topic. MARS conceded and gave the people making the noise what they wanted, a place to have their fight club without problems. There was no change to the porn rules, they've been the same since the beginning, only in the mature area. Also, a request which used to be polite courtesy was solidified in a rule when it was made clear to keep the personal attacks and harassment out of the other areas.
So what's the rub? We've got two ragequitters on the way out and one or two more in the que, so I guess I'm lost as to what their fucking problem is. Is it really such a big deal that you cannot troll everyone around the board being a pain in the ass? Truth be told, most of the people you want to troll start their threads in A17 anyhow, so take a deep breathe.
Even handed and nonabusive. I like that. But, why are there threads and posts by people complaining about disappearing content? ()
VVI posted an image of a blowjob in an area not marked NSFW. Pep wrote some sarcastic remarks in the Governance area about Wasted becoming an admin here.
Sarcasm and a blowjob... Sounds like a wonderful UK dinner date. =^-^=
You forgot the part about the customers and staff crossly telling you that you are stupid for ever wanting a purse in the first place.
if people are buying purses & toasters which I consider to be tacky, should I sic the fashion police on them? ...for the sake a fashion and good taste and all, of course. It's offensive to see old flea ridden bags out on the streets.
Please keep the attacks in the proper forum area.
Yeah, I hate it when they escape from the old folks home too. They really should consider electrifying the fences.
